Higher Education Act (HEA)

What is the HEA?

The Higher Education Act is the law, established in 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society agenda of domestic programs, which regulates many attributes of higher education, including accreditation standards, college affordability, campus crime reporting and financial aid. Another thrust of the law is to enhance resources allocated to postsecondary institutions.

Why is it important?

The HEA has been instrumental in many of the procedures and ways in which colleges and universities function across the nation. As such, the law determines the manner in which federal funding is allocated to higher education institutions and its students.
